There are four parts to this 2 hours long class. To help the students remove their shoes, winter jackets and to settle down, parents are requested to bring their child (ren) at least 5 minutes before the class.
Preparation and Homework
To get the best out of these sessions it is suggested that the students read up on the Karma and the Thirthankara for the upcoming session and prepare a list of questions to send to Samaniji at least a week before the session. This will help Samaniji tailor the session.
There is no prescribed homework. We recommend that the students produce creative content – essays, poems, drawings based on their learnings and send them to us so we can publish in JVBNA’s newsletter.

On December 13th, 2015 under the auspicious guidance of respected Samani Satya Pragyaji & Samani Rohini Pragyaji, JVBNJ Gyanshala students, parents, and teachers conducted a holiday drive by supplying daily hygiene items to Ozanam Family shelter located in Edison, NJ.
The children were also given a tour of the shelter. The sight of big families living in small square of room with just one bunk bed and a closet was disconcerting. Younger group of Gyanshala students were brimming with curiosity, and asked questions such as: “Do the children living in shelter go to school?, Do they get to eat ice creams and hot chocolate? Do they get medical help when needed?” and many more!! The insights gained at the shelter were heartwarming and emotional.
It was indeed a humbling experiences to be cherished when Gyanshala students faced this part of world as well and realized the Jain belief that “Sharing is caring”, and facts about aparigraha and Samabhavana . Children also realized that some help and gestures can go long way for some people in need and to make their lives better. Thus, by means of Gyanshala Holiday drive, Gyanshala students had a wonderful opportunity to practice their Jain spirits during the holiday season and hope to make this into a tradition in the near future.

Under the auspicious guidance of Samanijis, JVBNA members embarked on their annual month long Agam workshop on Saturday, Nov 21, at the JVBNA center. This year’s Agam is Gyata Dharma Katha. The workshop continued through the month of December and was an extremely enriching experience for all. By popular demand, Part 2 of the workshop will be offered starting on Saturday, Feb 13 and will run through the month of February. No registration will be required for this part and all are welcome to join. As each session deals with a new chapter, which essentially is a new insightful story, everyone is encouraged to attend sessions whenever they can.
“The festival of Deepawali is associated with light. Restraint is the highest light. The festival that is connected to Shraman Bhagwan Mahavir inspires us to soak up the light of restraint. The path of Samyak Gyan-Darshan-Charitra is the path of light. Gurudev Tulsi’s birth is linked to the Dwitiya after Diwali. Acharya Tulsi breathed this light and toiled relentlessly to spread it to the masses. Jain Vishwa Bharati Institute is likewise striving to disseminate this light through education. Under the auspicious leadership of Acharyashri Mahashrman, the university is celebrating its silver jubilee this year. May the light of education propagated by this university become the root of our conduct. For this to happen, it is essential that we infuse our lives with the light of restraint.”
These were the thoughts expressed by Samani Nirdeshika Dr. Satya Pragyaji at JVB New Jersey on the occasion of Diwali Milan, Tulsi Janma Jayanti, and JVBI Rajat Jayanti celebration on November 14. At this event, Samani Dr. Rohini Pragyaji delivered an introductory speech on Acharyashri Tulsi and the JVBI. Gyanshala children presented a play – Naanam Payassayaram – Knowledge is Light. The play highlighted the importance of the growth of external as well as internal knowledge. The play was directed by Gyanshala Cultural coordinator Venus Jain and her team.
JVBNA Board Chairman Pratap Jain spoke about the outstanding learning opportunities at JVBI and encouraged everyone to get connected and involved with the institute. Director Surendra Kankariya provided updates on the new property being acquired for JVBNA center. Secretary Sonya Doshi outlined the past and upcoming JVBNA programs under Samanijis’ guidance. Treasurer Sudhir Jain thanked all annual contributors who donated during annual Paryushan drive and encouraged everyone to participate in the program.

A workshop on Conflict Resolution and Anekantavada was organized on Oct 31 under the guidance of Samanijis. The workshop started with manglacharan.
Dr. Samani Rohini Pragyaji introduced the theme explaining conflict in terms of incompatibility of interests, opinions, lifestyles and many other things. These differences become problems when one is not skillful enough to take advantage of the differences. Anekanta doctrine explains a way out of these problems as humans have the ability to appreciate and learn not only from different but even opposite views.
The workshop continued with group activity. We had 5 teams of 4 members each. Every team was given a problem of differences that they tried to resolve in the best way they could. This way the participants actively became the owners of conflict-resolution party through dialogue they had within their teams. The performances of all the teams were excellent.
In the third part, Dr. Samani Satya Pragya ji presented her valuable thoughts on the theme in detail. She discussed that the foundation of conflicts was in fact a tussle between soul and karma. She also stressed that there will be some conflicts that will be unresolvable. She gave the keys of conflict resolution in terms of conflict prevention, conflict resolution, conflict management, and conflict transformation. The talk continued with practical tips for overcoming the situation of conflict and ended with a livley Q&A session. The workshop was very well received by all participant
Along with the start of the new school year, JVBNA successfully kicked off its Youth Forum with the first meeting on October 23. This forum is designed for older middle school children and high school children to meet once a month and its main purpose is to spiritually engage us and mentally help us through these stages in life. Coming into this meeting, we all had high expectations that we would learn a lot and take away something that we could use for the rest of our lives.
During the first hour, Samani Satya Pragyaji and Samani Rohini Pragyaji discussed the topic of “Physical Fitness and Discipline”. This is a very important topic, as it relates not only to our physical health, but also to our mental and emotional health. Samanijis touched upon the fact that through physical fitness we can achieve discipline and that discipline is essentially focus, which can be achieved through meditation – meditation – not in a conventional but liberal sense. This is to say that one needs to be mindful while eating, walking and in other day-today aspects of life.
During the second hour, Kavita Aunty (Kavita Kothari) helped us on the mental aspect of life by discussing that to achieve success, we should set goals for ourselves. Setting goals and reaching them gives one renewed confidence and self-esteem to keep doing so, and eventually achieving success. We also discussed our likes and dislikes, which will be further dwelled upon in following sessions. Though it is only the first meeting, I have already felt that by bringing together a spiritual sense with a mental one, we are truly bettering ourselves in this youthful stage.
On Oct 18, a workshop was organized on ‘Understanding Santhara’ under the guidance of Samani Satya Pragyaji and Samani Rohini Pragyaji at the Franklin Temple Gyanshala Rooms. Santhara is a subject that has brought all Jains together. However, this is also a subject that has generated numerous lively living room discussions in the past few months. This workshop was a great opportunity for understanding the subject under the guidance of Samanijis and more than 40 members took advantage of it. Ramesh Parmar opened the session with introducing the subject and elaborated on its legal background. Samani Rohini Pragyaji spoke about the treatment of death and dying in different faiths and cultures. Samani Satya Pragyaji spoke about Santhara and Sanlekhana in Jainism. She elaborated on the process, prerequisites, and expectations of Santhara and how it is different from suicide, mercy killing, and dying with dignity provided by living wills. A lively Q&A session followed. The workshop was very well received by all attendees.
Paryushan Parva was celebrated during September 10-17. During that week, under the auspicious presence of Samani Bhavit Pragyaji and Samani Sangh Pragyaji, pratikraman sessions were conducted by members of the JVBNA family. There was a bhajan presented everyday. Samaniji’s pravachan sessions elaborated upon how to conquer sloth, ego, deceit, anger, speech, and attachment and the power of Namokar Mantra and Kshamapana. The sessions were well attended and well received by all. Many members did tapasya including 9 and 8 upavas, belas, telas, athai of ekasans, and upavas. The auspicious week came to an end with samuhik parna at the center, as it has become a tradition from past years.

The days were filled with lectures, workshops, spiritual, and social sessions. Samanijis delivered many lectures including “Live in Nature, Live with Nature Peacefully and Importance of Life – Giving and Receiving is Best Described by External and Internal Relationships” presented by Samani Parimal Pragyaji and Samani Vikas Pragyaji and “Get Your Magnet Right – Thought, Action, & Energy and Enrich your Life by the Practice of Non-Violence” presented by Samani Ratna Pragyaji and Samani Maryada Pragyaji. The lectures were very well received by the attendees. Jain Vishwa Bharati and Jain Vishwa Bharati Institute were awarded Outstanding Services and Education Award by JAINA. The award was accepted by the respected Samanijis.
JVBNA conducted this year’s Spiritual Family Camp Understanding Joy & Sorrow from June 12th – 14th at Arsh Vidya, PA. Samanijis – Parimalpragyaji, Vikaspragyaji, Maryadapragyaji & Ratnapragyaji provided valuable inputs to adults with a mix of Jain philosophy & insightful strategies in topics like “How to Develop Understanding” before delving on the actual camp theme – Understanding Joy & Sorrow. Desires, Attachment and Negative thinking were attributed as the primary causes of sorrow. Samanijis highlighted the reasoning and practical ways to overcome them to bring about inherent joy from within. The session “Change your shoes, change your life” led participants into comprehensive aspect of leshya – karma – soul connection. Everyone was in awe of various nuances laid out in Jain philosophy from gross to subtle level.
The kids & youth also enjoyed age appropriate sessions with topics ranging from life skills to philosophy interspersed with craft & interactive games conducted by Samanijis and volunteers. Mornings started off with prayers with meditation led by Samani Ratnapragyaji & Yoga by Rameshji Parmar. Practical sessions of meditation & relaxation were also a part of the schedule for all the participants during the day.
The camp brought out the creativity in everyone during the evening session “Express Yourself”. The kids shone in a skit “The Best Life”. Youth came up with their own skit ideas with various Jain concepts like four bhavanas & moral values. There were 10 small skits presented by the adults on various themes including Samta, You are what you eat, You are what you think, Sankalp, Maha kanjoos, Bhavanaon ko badlo. Another session Katha Char Bodh Hazaar made everyone delve deep to come up with unique morals from the stories narrated by Samanijis.
JVBNA is grateful to the Samanijis from Houston & Orlando in making this an enriching camp for young and old alike.
The camp experience was beautifully captured in the poem composed by Surendraji Kankariya as below –
हमारी आध्यात्म राह में इस शिबिर ने एक नया पद चिन्ह लगा दिया,
वन्दामी आभार आपका ।
समनी परिमलप्रज्ञाजी ने “How to Develop Understanding” का पाठ पढ़ाया,

The annual program was ended on a wonderful note with Samaniji Vikas Pragyaji’s Pravachan. Her speech was about the materials in our daily lives: for example children used notepad, pencil, toys, etc. and explained how it affects us. For example, the pencil always leaves a mark on the notepad when we use it and even after we erase it, the impression of the pencil on the notepad is still there. She explained it further that we must utilize it to make a good impression on ourselves and others especially the children. The program was concluded with Mangal Path led by Samanijis.
Akshay Tritiya was celebrated in the auspicious presence of Samani Shukla Pragyaji and Samani Unnata Pragyaji, on May 2, 2015, at the Six Mile Run Church in Franklin Park, NJ.

The 13 participants of the Bhajan competition – children and adults alike – set forth a very difficult task for the judges – Samani Shukla Pragyaji, Kamal ji Daga, and Sanjay ji Jain. The Bhajan competition winners were Manasi Sulakshana, in first place, and Natasha Modi in the 2nd.
The pravachan by Samani Unnata Pragyaji started off with a recitation of a poem by Acharya Mahapragyaji, about ”Mann”, keeping the course of the theme of the evening, followed by Jaap of Om Rhim Shrim, Arham Rishabh Devayo Namah!

She also spoke about being aware of our every action, something which is very important. She prescribed four capsules for a happy life: control your tongue, control your senses, control your desires, and control your emotions.
The evening came to a blessed ending with Mangal Path by Samanijis.
On Sunday, March 14, the families of JVBNA gathered at Six Mile Run Church for the colorful celebrations of Holi under the auspicious presence of Samani Shuklapragyaji and Samani Unnatapragyaji. She compared the white Holi to the most colorful Holi ever as the color white is just a balance of all the colors in the right intensity – a balance that we should strive for in our lives in order to achieve purity and peace. The highlight of the evening was the set of skits, written and directed by Samanijis, that brought forward the importance of communication – speaking, listening and understanding – performed by the older students of Gyanshala.
Samani Shuklapragyaji spoke on the themes of balance and communication. She conducted a game of trivia and memory among the audience that was well received. Her pravachan emphasized on the importance of effective listening as opposed to talking – such as why we have two ears and only one mouth. Ineffective communication is one of the main reasons for discord in our lives. We don’t listen wholeheartedly; we only listen half-way and then quickly interrupt the conversation with our ideas or ways. This is the cause of communication breakdown at home, workplace, school, and other places.
Samani Unnatapragyaji gave a speech on the importance of the spiritual colors and how they affect our balance. Each color has a purpose and helps the functioning of one part of the body. She also emphasized on the importance of being in balance that affects our environment and people around us in a more positive way. The Holi Milan celebration was well attended and well received by adults and children alike.
A Workshop with Samani Shuklapragyaji & Samani Unnatapragyaji

Samani Unnatapragyaji conducted a very interesting experiment with the participating audiences, who were divided into 5 teams, and had to present a dish using Jain principles and values as its ingredients. The teams were given topics on which they had to present their spiritual dishes. It was a very creative culinary effort by all the teams to bring forth a dish created with the Jain fundamentals, which was then relished by every one.
Samani Shuklapragyaji’s pravachan was very insightful. She discussed about the well being of a human being. Spirituality is all about the practice of some principles to experience a blissful life – positive thoughts, right attitude, awareness of your action, setting goals in life, and setting priorities for self. It is also very important for our overall well being – physical well being, mental well being, financial well being, social well being, and spiritual well being.
She discussed how we need to make our weak week into win week, by being well-organized, innovative, and bringing in new ideas in life and getting rid of our worries, ego, anger and knots in our relationships. We all need to make a call with ourselves to find the purpose of our lives, and engage in self introspection into realizing the potential of the human life. The choice is ours to make the required changes in life to attain the moksha and connect with the divine.
Samani Unnatapragyaji also conducted a parallel session on well-being with the Gyanshala children. This was a very inspiring and interactive session and was very well received by the children.

Day 1 Power of Samayik
Samaniji explained the benefits of Samayik. Samayik is the time that you try to detach yourself from the outside world and focus on your spirituality or inner soul. Samayik is also the purification of soul from the bondings and is also a form of meditation. Samayik is usually practiced for 48 minutes a day. Samaniji also said if you practice 5 minutes of meditation everyday, it’ll help you to get closer to your inner self.
Day 2 Power of Logassa
Samaniji explained the power of Logassa. The reasons behind the logassa is a tribute to all 24 tirthankars. Not only it is a tribute, some of the verses in this mantras has power such as “Arogga Bohi Lahbham” is a pain reliever mantra,
“Sagar-vara-gambhira” is positive attitude mantra,
“Aa-ichchesu Ahiyam paya sayara” stimulates the power of intuition, and
“Chandesu Nimmala-Yara” promotes peace of mind.
All of these mantras have immense power when one does it the correct way. Samaniji also explained if one can do 36 Logassa a day for a month, it’s equal to 15 upvas.
Day 3 Power of Swadhyay
Samaniji explained the purpose of swadhyay which is the reading or listening of spiritual books or discourses. Topics of swadhyay focus on the bigger questions such as: “Who am I?”, “Where am I?”, and of course focus on the soul. The information on most of the Jain books are same whether one is Shwetambar, Digambar, etc. but the way of relaying the information are different among the groups.
Day 4 Power of Pratikraman
Purpose of Pratikraman is to look into your past actions and repent for these actions and purify the soul at the same time, Samaniji explained. There are 2 types of Pratikraman, one is a ritual pratikraman which is a shorter version and shorter timing than the other kind, which is the spiritual pratikraman. Spiritual pratikraman focuses on the control of anger, desires, and ego. It also can lead us to the final destination moksha if practiced wholeheartedly and with awareness. Also by doing the pratikraman, one doesn’t have enemies from the smallest beings to humans.
Day 5 Power of Mantra
Mantras are the essence of ultimate knowledge especially Navkar Mantra, which is the essence of the knowledge of 14 Purvas. The purpose of this mantra is the release of the desires and ego and it also provides the cure for one’s ailments. Samaniji provided the framework of how the mantra works – based on which part of your body and what color to focus on while chanting, and its purpose:
Namo Arihantanam (Gyan Kendra): crown of head, white, knowledge
Namo Siddhanam (Darshan Kendra): third eye (middle of the forehead between 2 eyes), red/orange, concentration
Namo Aayariaanam (Vishu Kendra): throat, yellow, purity
Namo Uvajhayaanam (Anand Kendra): heart/chest, green, enjoyment or bliss
Namo Loe Savvasahoonam (Shakti Kendra): naval, blue, strength
Day 6 Power of Kayotsarg
Kayotsarg is the detachment of your body from the soul. Meditation and mantra can help you gain better perspective and eventually lead you to bliss and detachment from pain, desire, and ego. It also can relieve your ailments such as backache, sleeping issues, and stress. Any mantra can help you to focus on how to detach from the worldly desires, relationship, and material and focus on the soul only. One should learn how to perform their daily duties with no expectations.
Day 7 Power of Pratyakhyan (Vows)
Samaniji explained the purpose of pratyakhyan or vows, limiting yourselves to what you can do in a day such as not eating more than 15 items a day, buying certain number of clothes a year, upvas etc. There are 2 kinds of pratyakhyan: material vows and spiritual vows. Material vows focus on outer needs such as foods, clothes, shoes, etc. and spiritual vows focus on inner need such as anger, sadness, greed, etc. Material and spiritual vows work together and these vows help you to realize your inner soul.
Day 8 Power of Kshamapana and Samvatsari
Kshamapana and Samvatsari symbolize the cleansing of our inner beings from the enmities toward anyone such as family, friends, and others who we may have had contact with. It is another way of asking forgiveness to be freed from the karmas.
In addition to evening sessions, morning swadhyay sessions were held everyday at the JVBNA center. During these sessions, Samanijis discussed the meaning of Pratikraman, and touched upon 18 Bhavanas. All morning and evening sessions were very well received and well attended.
